Legal assistance needed in DUBAI

Hi everyone….sorry for the long post! My wife and I needs some advice or legal assistance, it concerns money matters. Anyway here’s the scenario… My wife was asked by a co-worker if she can lend her money because he badly needs it and it’s somehow important concerning his family. He was asking for 150K dirhams…He told my wife that he will surely pay it back, he gave my wife assurances like…he’s a regular employee (one of the top companies at Dubai) for 6 years working on top management, he’s a local resident of Dubai and showing his local UAE passport, etc, etc...to make it short…my wife agreed to help and told him that she doesn’t have that amount of money but she will tap up her loan to facilitate the money that he needs and just pay whatever interest the bank will impose…with it he then offered a few additional percent interest on top of the bank rate for trouble. To make it short...my wife was convinced and after giving the money…the guy issued a check amounting to the principal amount (he told my wife that he will just give the interest in cash after the check is en cashed) dated 3 months after and gave a photocopy of his passport. 3 months passed and the check was due for deposit….out of courtesy my wife call the guy to inform him that she will deposit the check but was told if she can extended it till next week…this happened 2nd of January. Weeks passed and all she got was extensions…so I told my wife give him till February last week if he still doesn’t commit just deposit the check…so she did, as expected the check doesn’t have any funds on it. She spoke to the manager and was told to file a legal case. Good thing I was on vacation at that time so I went over there to help her out (I reside here in the Philippines)….The legal case was filled and opened March 2nd week at the police station…but until this date there’s no progress or whatsoever…When she calls the police station to follow up…all she gets is excuses like “we cant do anything about it but wait”…”its not a big case so just wait”…”we already informed his family of your complain”…I thought stealing is a grave thing based on their religion? Now they’re telling it’s not a big case??? I know 150K isn’t a big amount of money to most of the local residents of Dubai but for us…it is. I know it’s my wife’s fault that she trusted a co-worker that easily but we can’t do anything about it anymore but find a solution… I already filled my vacation leave for this year and hopefully if it will be approved I will go back there July to help on things…So if any of the guys here can give advice or know what other steps we can do to expedite the case, your help will be very much appreciated. We are not familiar of the legal system of UAE nor do we know anybody influential that can assist us… It really pains me whenever I think of it…my wife, working and paying up her loan for the money that she didn’t even spend but in good faith lend it to help another person. One more thing that annoys me is that the person involved is out on the streets partying and driving around like a free man as if he doesn’t have any obligation at all. Thanks guys for reading my post
